Some technical details about the photos...

The pictures that I have posted are at 33% of the original size and at 75% JPEG quality to keep the size down (so I can upload more and it doesn't take so long to upload or download them). I have also done no post-processing to correct things like the color balance. The lights on the field or in the gym can make everything look just plain weird. If you want to make prints you are welcome to use those images. However, they probably will not make decent prints larger than 4x6…and you may not like colors. So if you want the original, un-retouched images in the original size and best quality send me an email with the picture name and we will work something out.

I shoot a Nikon D100 with a variety of Nikon glass, both new (autofocus) and old (manual focus):

  1. Nikon Series E 75-150mm f3.5 (manual focus) - outdoors

  2. Nikkor 28-200mm f3.5-5.6 AF G - outdoors, some indoors

  3. Nikkor 300mm f4 (manual focus) - outdoors

  4. Nikkor 50mm f1.8 (manual focus) - indoors

  5. Nikkor 35mm f2.0 AF D - indoors

The D100 records camera settings in the EXIF fields, so you can see what settings were used for each picture. The older manual lenses do not convey aperture information to the camera, shows up as either blank or "f0" when I am shooting the old glass. You can pretty well assume that the lens was wide open if I was shooting indoors.

I use a Kodak 18% grey card to set the white balance at each venue. This almost always gives better color rendition than any other setting. If you are a D100 shooter, I highly recommend carrying the small (4"x5") grey card with you in your bag, especially when you shoot at indoor gyms and arenas.

Indoors, the ISO setting is usually 1000-1600.

Recently I have been favoring the 50mm f1.8 and the 35 mm f2.0 because I can keep the ISO setting down to 1000-1250 by shooting at f2.0-2.5. Since the beginning of 2005 I haven't used the 28-200 at all because the lens stops down rather quickly you increase the focal length. The long focal lengths are neat to use, but there just isn't enough light in these high school gyms to afford to stop down to f4 or higher and maintain any kind of a decent shutter speed (1/125 or better).
